About SCoTA

The introduction of globalCOAL's Standard Coal Trading Agreement (SCoTA) in 2001 revolutionised international coal trading. For the first time it became possible to buy and sell physical coal cargos quickly, efficiently, and with no basis risk.

Today, with over 2,000 Licensed Users worldwide, SCoTA is recognised as the contract of choice for the trade of seaborne thermal coal. SCoTA underlies all transactions on the globalCOAL platform and can also be used offline, in bilateral and brokered deals.

What is SCoTA?

SCoTA combines a single, accepted set of standard terms and conditions together with a range of coal quality specifications and delivery points for international coal sales and purchases. As a result, SCoTA enables buyers and sellers of a particular product and delivery period to focus on what matters most: price discovery.

SCoTA is a living document. It is continuously refined and updated in close collaboration with the industry. In this way, it remains relevant, effective and readily captures new market opportunities.

Benefits of using SCoTA

Efficiency:

No need for lengthy T&C negotiations. Focus on price discovery.

Transparency:

Pricing basis is clear and unequivocal. Contracts can be compared with absolute certainty.

Confidence:

No basis risk in back-to-back transactions. Flexibility to reverse positions for all market participants.

How can I download SCoTA?

Access to SCoTA is free.

To download the contract and use in bilateral coal sale and purchase transactions, you will first be asked to sign the globalCOAL Product Licensing Agreement (PLA).

The Product Licensing Agreement protects globalCOAL's intellectual property. It is free to sign the PLA and to download SCoTA. Please note that globalCOAL actively protects its intellectual property.

Once you are a Licensed User you will have access to our dedicated client portal where you will be able to download the contract in full, or use our SCoTA Build tool to create a bespoke version customised to your own requirements.
