About SCoTA
Since it was first introduced in 2001, globalCOAL's Standard Coal Trading Agreement (SCoTA) has revolutionised international coal trading. SCoTA enables users to buy and sell physical coal cargoes quickly, efficiently and with limited basis risk.
Today, with over 2,500 Licensed Users worldwide, SCoTA is recognised as the contract of choice for the trade of seaborne thermal and metallurgical coal. SCoTA underlies all transactions on the globalCOAL platform and can also be used offline, in bilateral and brokered deals.
What is SCoTA?
SCoTA combines a single, accepted set of standard terms and conditions together with a range of coal quality specifications and delivery points for international coal sales and purchases. As a result, market participants can focus negotiations on what matters most: Price discovery.
SCoTA is a living document. It is continuously refined and updated in close collaboration with the industry. In this way, it remains relevant, effective and readily captures new market opportunities.

How can I download SCoTA?
Access to SCoTA is free. However, SCoTA is a registered trademark and globalCOAL owns intellectual property rights in SCoTA. It may only be used under a license granted by globalCOAL.
To download the contract and use in bilateral coal sale and purchase transactions, you will first be asked to sign the globalCOAL Product Licensing Agreement (PLA).†
Once you are a Licensed User you will have access to our dedicated client portal where you will be able to download the contract in full.
